Broker vs. Carrier Explained
At Moving Solutions, transparency matters. Many customers are unfamiliar with the difference between a household goods broker and a motor carrier, so we want to clearly explain how the moving industry works and what role we may serve during your relocation.
What Is a Motor Carrier?
A motor carrier is the company that physically transports your household goods using its trucks, drivers, equipment, and operational staff.
The motor carrier:
- Loads and unloads the shipment
- Transports the shipment
- Issues the Bill of Lading at pickup
- Maintains operational authority with the FMCSA
- Carries cargo and liability insurance required by law
- Is responsible for transportation-related claims arising during transit
Some shipments booked through Moving Solutions may be transported directly by our affiliated carrier division.
What Is a Household Goods Broker?
A household goods broker arranges transportation services between customers and licensed interstate motor carriers.
As a broker, Moving Solutions may:
- Coordinate logistics
- Provide estimates and scheduling assistance
- Match customers with licensed interstate carriers
- Assist with dispatch and communication
- Help facilitate claims submission to the assigned carrier when requested
A broker does not physically transport household goods unless operating under carrier authority for that specific shipment.
How Moving Solutions Operates
Moving Solutions may operate as a federally licensed household goods broker, a motor carrier, or both, depending on route availability, shipment size, scheduling, and operational logistics.
Because interstate transportation is dynamic, some shipments may be:
- Handled directly by our carrier division
- Assigned to a licensed partner carrier
- Serviced through a combination of brokerage coordination and carrier operations
Customers may therefore receive:
- Brokerage and/or carrier documents
- A Bill of Lading from the assigned carrier
- Revised estimates issued by the servicing carrier if inventory or services change at pickup
How Will I Know Who My Carrier Is?
Prior to or at pickup, customers will receive documentation identifying the servicing motor carrier responsible for transportation. This typically includes:
- Carrier name, USDOT number, and MC number
- Bill of Lading
- Driver or dispatch contact information
Licensing & Compliance
Moving Solutions only works with carriers that are federally licensed, FMCSA-authorized, and properly insured. Customers are encouraged to verify carrier authority directly through the FMCSA website.
Important Consumer Information
- The estimate is based on the inventory and services disclosed at booking.
- Additional items or services at pickup may result in revised pricing.
- Delivery windows are estimated and may vary due to route logistics, weather, and federal driving-hour regulations.
- Claims for loss or damage are generally handled by the servicing motor carrier identified on the Bill of Lading.

Whether acting as a broker, carrier, or both, our goal is clear communication, regulatory compliance, and a successful relocation experience for every customer.
